Though we often separate Art and Science into distinct
disciplines (witness the trek necessary to catch an art
studio class right after intro to Physics!), they are
in many ways vitally linked by a central mission –
to describe experience and the world around us. Lest anyone
doubt this, consider Leonardo da Vinci, who was as much
a scientist as an artist. Indeed it is not always easy
to separate his artistic and his scientific interests;
his drawings of water are compelling both as documents
of natural observation and as sensitive exercises in patterns
of light and shade.
Art’s debt to Science is immense. Without Science
many of the achievements in art in the Western World from
the time of the Renaissance would be unthinkable. This
course explores the profound impact scientific principles
have had on the development of art in the Western World
and considers how science continues to inform the creative
energies of artists today. Students will emerge from this
class with a thorough understanding of the importance
of perspective, optics, Einstein’s theory of Relativity
and Blanc’s observations on color, among others,
for the development of art by artists as diverse as Masaccio,
Vermeer, Picasso and Seurat. They should also gain an
appreciation of the interconnectedness of human knowledge.

The Art of Drawing: A Left and Right Brain Experience;
(3 credits) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD.

BooksMTuWThF... 3:00pm- 6:00pm (ASY 3211)
This course is composed of two parts, a lecture and studio
drawing. The lectures examine a wide range of old and
modern master drawings from the Early Renaissance to the
Twentieth Century. The lectures also examine how artists
used various drawing techniques and materials to distinctively
and accurately record their observable, physical world.
Old Master artists include Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael,
Durer, Rembrandt and Rubens. Modern masters include Ingres,
Gauguin, Picasso, Kollwitz, Wyeth and Thiebaud. The studio
portion of this course is basic instruction in perceptual
drawing. This instruction is based on the series of drawing
exercises from Betty Edward’s text, Drawing on the
Right Side of the Brain. No prior drawing experience is
necessary. However, students should be willing to extend
a concerted amount of time and effort on each studio assignment.
