Professor Josephine Withers specializes in the study of twentieth-century art. Her book Julio Gonzalez: Sculpture in Iron is a major monograph on the great Catalan sculptor. Professor Withers is a leading figure in feminist scholarship, especially as it is applied to contemporary women's art. Her articles in that field have been included in the Art Journal, Arts Magazine, The New Art Examiner, and Feminist Studies. Her article "A Vision of Women's History: Judy Chicago's Dinner Party" is in Essays in Honor of H.W. Janson. She was Associate Editor for Art for Feminist Studies and is active in the Women's Caucus for Art. She has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts for her exhibition "Women Artists in Washington Collections" and for the organization of the National Conference of Women in the Visual Arts.
